Writing in Sakun

Until recently the Sakun language was entirely spoken with the only attempts to write down any aspect of the language by outsiders collecting wordlists like the one produced by Charles Kingsley Meek in the early 1900’s. The first book written in the Sakun language was Dzum tahda gəma Zhigəla nə gəma Sakun by Bishop L.T. Waziri. The writing system developed during the Sakun Language Documentation Project and used in scholarly publications such as my 2014 Dissertation, A Grammar of Sakun (Sukur), is currently being revised to facilitate use of the orthography in digital domains such as text messages and social media.
